Using tools in pottery is an essential element to making a great piece. one of the main tools i used was the rib tool. the rib tool helped me smooth out any imperfections and made my piece look more professional. another tool i liked was the pottery wheel, the wheel helped me understand different ways to use clay and the balance of water when working with the clay. lastly but most importantly was the slab roller. the slab roller was the start of every piece i made and made the process of starting a piece very easy by making it uniform in thickness. at the beginning of the semester i had no clue what a single clay tool was and now i feel very confident in knowing what item to utilize when making a piece
The process of my Pit Fire included acid, salt stuck on with spray adhesive, tea bags, and leaves.then it was wrapped in aluminium foil and paper. The difficulties i came across was the clay cracking during the molding process and part of it falling off. i had to reattach it with clay and scoring. What i found successful was the colors i got. i made my piece into the shape of an ashtray and i wanted it to look smokey and dark. My planned ended up changing during the shaping process, i planned just a regular bowl but ended up carving in the divots because it was looking too boring.
In order to make the tripod mug i made a slab of clay and pinched the bottom. then i curved out the body of the mug into a circle to mimic Mike from Monsters Inc. i found the method i used for the feet of the mug to be successful and unique compared to other mugs. Waiting too long or not covering it over weekends caused it too dry out too much and make it a little difficult to round out the mug fully. A clay slab is clay rolled flat and made into a cylinder to create a mug/vase.
Artist Daniel Arsham is a New York City based artist whose work is showcased around the world. the materials used for his 3D pieces are fiberglass, paint, and joint compound. The image above is a piece called Hidden Figure displayed in an exhibit called Elastic Walls, found in Amsterdam. Daniel Arsham is known for challenging the ideas of what 3D art is and what it should be. Popular themes found in his art work are different versions of decaying pop culture (sports and music). He can be found at danielarsham.com and danielarsham on instagram. The reason why i chose Daniel to write this blog about is for his architectural and use of illusion. The way his pieces look trick my mind at first glance and want me to make pieces similarly to his
